November Vibes

- It's time for cuddles, fireplaces and some hot fashion to stay warm -

We switched from summertime to wintertime last weekend. While on the one hand, I had one extra hour of sleep, the days are getting noticeably shorter, and the temperature is declining, on the other hand. Which means spending more time inside the house preferably in front of a fireplace.

So, in the spirit of colder shorter days ahead, I created my November Mood Board

October Vibes

- Sweater Weather -

I don't know how you are all feeling about it, but as much as I love the summer season, I also hold a place in my heart for the colder season. I love the falling leaves, the smell of cinnamon and a crackling fireplace.

Oh, and of course a new season always means a changing wardrobe. I already started to stock up on some cosy knits. So, don't forget to check out my Outfit Post in the upcoming weeks to see what I got.

This month's mood board was inspired by the fashion for the looming colder season, let me know what's your favourite fall/winter style.

September Vibes

- Baby, it's getting cold outside -

First post of the month, you know the drill...

I can't believe we are already entering the last quarter of the month. Slowly but surely, the days get shorter and darker, that's why I kept this Month Mood Board more subdued.

July Vibes

- Summer Dreaming -

Apparently, summer has decided to leave Northern Germany. For the last week, I woke up to the sound of rain and fell asleep to it.

So in hopes that the summer might show its face again, I created this month Mood Board. What else than sun-kissed skin and white clothes embodies summer more? Okay, maybe ice cream. However, fashion-wise there is nothing else, at least for me.

What puts you into summer vibes? Please tell me in the comment section below.

Other than that, I hope you have a wonderful month of July. Please don't forget to subscribe to my Instagram and Pinterest.

Blog Update

And suddenly you know: It's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.

                                                                                                                                              Meister Eckhart

You may have noticed that my blog was offline yesterday and if you take a closer look as well as browse through the blog, you might observe, that some things have changed.

After much hesitation, I finally decided to post pictures of myself on my blog.

Somewhere between primary school and my teenage years, I started to feel uncomfortable in front of a camera and hardly liked any picture of me. So, I tried to avoid any photo taken of me for a long time and wasn't planning to change that policy anytime soon.

But during my first year of blogging, I began to realise that my blog was missing something essential - myself.

I started this blog as an outlet to express my love for all things fashion, beauty, and lifestyle related. My goal is to make fashion and beauty more approachable by breaking down everything I learned so far, into simple, coherent, and easy-to-read blog posts.

I also convinced myself, it didn't require any photos of myself to get my point across. However, I must admit I was wrong. A personal blog doesn't work if the person running it is invisible. Therefore, I decided to step out of my comfort zone, take a chance and post pictures of myself, so that you have a face to my name.

From now on, you will find a new category on Shades of K "Outfits". Theron, I will share with you my personal style so that you get to know me better because, for me, there is nothing more personal than style.

Of course, I will continue to post other fashion, beauty and lifestyle posts which are not solely related to my personal style.

Furthermore, I added sub-pages to each category to make it easier for you to browse through my blog.

Finally, I also redesigned my About as well as my Contact page. From now on, you simply have to fill out the contact form to get in touch with me.

That's it from my side. As always I love to hear your feedback.

Oh, and just because I haven't shared a quote in quite a while, this is one of my favourites at the moment...

Peace starts with suffering.

Freedom starts with confinement.

Courage starts with fear.

Strength starts with surrender.

Every mountain starts from beneath the earth,

and you too, shall rise.

February Vibes

What the world needs now...

is love sweet love,

It's the only thing that there's just too little of.

What the world needs now is love sweet love.

No, not just for some but for everyone.

'What the world needs now'  Lyrics by Hal David

For the last ten days, this song is ringing in my ears, especially when I watch the news or maybe it's just because advertising for Valentine's Day is what feels like everywhere.

Anyways, I hope you all had a great start into the new year. The above song might have influenced my February Mood Board in some shape or form. I hope you like it.

Holiday Vibes

Ever since I was little, board games are my thing. What better time to relive this passion to the fullest than the Christmas holidays, when everybody gets together. So for all of you who are still looking for some fun things to do during the holiday season, I'll suggest some rounds of board games. Here are my well-tested and approved favourites.

DiXit

DiXit is a mixture between board and card game. You need at least three people to play this game. The goal of this game is to score more points than anybody. To achieve this, you have to use your imagination and creativity to describe and guess the artistic picture cards better than your fellow players. I love that this game always unlocks different sources of interpretation every time you play it. As the cards are so rich in details, you'll always find a new way to do so.

Café International

This one is an oldie but a goodie. The game is for 2-4 players. In contrast to DiXit, it is all about strategy and some luck.

The purpose of this game is to place as many people as possible at the tables of the Café International. Therefore every player holds cards showing people from all over the world. By seating those cards strategically at the tables, you can score points and benefits. The player who holds the most points, in the end, is the winner. The best thing about Cafe International is the mix between strategy and luck. While you can decide how to play your cards, you can't choose them.

Power Yahtzee

I am sure all of you know the classic Yahtzee game. This version puts an interesting twist on the traditional dice game. Instead of five dice, you get a sixth 'power dice' and with it multiple ways to score and win the game. I prefer this version because the 'power dice' adds some unpredictability to the game.

Phase 10 Twist

If you like the card game Phase 10, you will love this board game version. The added 'twist space' can shake-up the whole game, by offering rewards or penalties. It is much faster and provides more room for strategic moves. I have spent evenings, just playing this single game and still, it never gets old.

Have fun playing and Happy Holidays.

P.S.: Check in next week for two posts dedicated to making you look and feel the best for your New Year's Eve party.

See you soon.

DIY:  How to make Christmas Decorations out of sandwich paper bags

Christmas decoration can be so beautiful but also so extremely time-consuming especially if you do it yourself. I came across an awesome Christmas decoration project which is the precise opposite -A Christmas Star made of Sandwich Paper Bags.

These Stars are great for switching up your usual Christmas decorations, and are done in no time.

Materials

- sandwich paper bags (8 for each star)

- a glue stick

- a ruler and a pencil

- paper scissors

- sellotape

- punch pliers or a puncher

- nylon tape

Instructions

1. Take 8 sandwich paper bags, place them in front of you with the opening upwards.

(If your paper bags have a shorter and a longer side, let the shorter side face upwards).

2. Use your glue stick to make a downward facing capital T on one sandwich paper bag, then place another one directly on top. Repeat the process until all eight bags are glued together.

3. Take the pencil and ruler, mark the middle of the bag at the upper edge. Next mark one point on each side of the upper bag (which have to be at the same height), so that your markings form an imaginary triangle. Now cut out the outside parts of your 'triangle'

(By changing up the lower markings you can create different shapes for your stars).

4. Now fan out the paper bags, so that the outer ones meet in the middle and voilà your star is born

5. To finish you have two option:

a) You can glue the outside bags together, the same way you did before, then sellotape the upper star peak, punch a hole into the sellotape, pass the nylon band through it, and knot the ends.

b) If you want to store the Stars for the next Christmas season, skip the glueing step as described in point a. This way you just have to remove the nylon band, cut the sellotape, and you can fold them back for storage.

And that's all! Easy isn't it?

You can hang these Christmas Stars into your window, on a larger empty wall or even from a high ceiling. Whether you go with a single star or with multiple like I did is your choice. The Stars are also a great idea as a Christmas party gift.

Tip: You could also spray-paint them in the colour of your choice to match the rest of your Christmas decoration.

I love to hear your feedback. Until then. Have a good one.

What you should know about green tea

You may have noticed by now, that I love to incorporate natural ingredients into my beauty and health regime. Green tea is one of those. I love what it can to for my body both externally and internally.

Green tea contains an impressive amount of antioxidants and nutrients. The most active and powerful ingredients are polyphenols. Polyphenols are potent antioxidants. They help your body to sustain its health and beauty by protecting your cells from free radical damage. Free radical damage accelerates ageing even worse contributes to diseases. Green tea is also rich in caffeine, minerals and vitamins. Various studies have indicated that all of these natural ingredients can improve your overall beauty and health. Here are the most important effects.

1. Green Tea Can Improve Your Brain Function

Next to the already mentioned caffeine, green tea also contains L-Theanine an amino acid. This combo is extremely effective at improving your brain function

2. Green Tea Can Improve Your Overall Health

The high amount of antioxidants stops the cell damage, thereby lowering the risk for a variety of diseases. Some studies even show that green tea drinkers have a decreased risk for multiple forms of cancer. Moreover, green tea is said to be beneficial for lowering your cholesterol, blood sugar levels as well as the risk for cardiovascular diseases. Green tea also comprises catechin. Catechin has a shielding effect on neurones. According to studies, this leads to a reduced risk of Alzheimer.

3. Green Tea Improves Your Dental Hygiene

Once again catechin comes into play. Due to some studies, it can kill bacterias. So drinking green tea on a regular basis can lower your risk of caries and give you better breath.

4. Green Tea Is An Inexpensive Way To Amp Up Your Beauty Routine

Green tea is a great addition to your beauty routine because the high amount of polyphenols, minerals, vitamins and caffeine work wonders on your complexion. The antibacterial effect of catechin can help to reduce inflammation, acne, and scars. While the antioxidants are a great asset in fighting the signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, uneven skin, and sun damage.

Used green tea bags are great for your eye area. The caffeine and tannin help shrink the blood vessels there, resulting in minimised puffiness. The polyphenols can improve fine lines and wrinkles. Last but not least Vitamin K may help to lighten discoloration under the eyes (like dark circles).

Tip: Just put your used green tea bags in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, afterwards, place them on your closed eyes for a good quarter of an hour, and ultimately, your eye area will look tighter and brighter.

Do you have any green tea hacks, let me know? Until then, have a good one.

Monthly RoundUp October

As always, at the end of every month, here is my Monthly RoundUp. I did some ASOS shopping in October, therefore, this one is a little fashion-heavy.

New boots

I added this new pair of boots to my collection. Also, they have a 10,5 cm heel, it feels like walking on air. Even better, I didn't have any blisters after the first use. Since such heels aren't easy to find, I am already thinking about buying the burgundy version of these boots. Also, I strongly believe, that one can never have enough shoes.

Baker Boy Hat

I can't get enough of hats. They are great for bad hair days but furthermore, add that extra something to each look. That's why I am always on the hunt for a new one. This baker boy hat is the newest addition to my collection.

Go-to Jeans

Finding a well-fitting pair of jeans can be a challenge, on my recent ASOS shopping spree, I ordered the "Sculpt Me" jeans, it promises "to mould the body".

If this means the jeans fit like a glove, then I second the claim. The "Sculpt Me" jeans are the most comfortable jeans I have worn in a long time, come with a reasonable price tag, and in many different styles.

Mac Fix+ Dupe

Last but not least, my one none fashion item for the month of October the Heritage Rosewater & Glycerin. The one beauty product I purchase over and over again is the Mac Fix+ Spray. I always have a backup, so I don't run dry. The only drawback is, due to my high consumption, I spend a good amount of money on this rather pricey product. That's why, I searched for a cheaper dupe and came across the Heritage Rosewater & Glycerin.

Unfortunately, I am still waiting for the parcel, but I keep you updated if it is actually a much cheaper dupe for the Mac Fix+ spray.

For November I plan to blog posts covering some of the topics you requested. Is there anything else you like me to cover, let me know? Until then...

Monthly Roundup - September

Here we are again, for another Monthly RoundUp. While the first three weeks of September felt like summer, fall has kicked in over the last week. Which brings me directly to my first point, so let's get started.

Fall/Winter Fragrances
With dropping temperatures, I can finally put the lighter fragrances to the side and reach for the more intense perfumes. One of my all time favourites is "Cinema" by Yves Saint Laurent I just can't get enough of this oriental scent. While it is on the pricier side, it is for sure worth the money. The base notes amber, vanilla, and white musk linger on your skin for hours to go - so a little goes a long way.

Robert M. Drake
I love to read that's why I am always on the search for a great book. During September I discovered the work of Robert M. Drake through Instagram. I haven't read something like this in a very long time and I don't have the words to describe his stunning style of writing. If I have made you curious, check out his Instagram page, there you'll find a lot of great snippets of his books.
P.S.: Make sure to follow me on Instagram. I post daily, beauty and fashion related stuff.

The Magnificent Seven
For me, the movie year so far was mediocre, most of the movies I watched didn't live up to my expectations. Last Sunday, I watched The Magnificent Seven with my Dad, and I was pleasantly surprised. I am not such a huge western movie fan like my dad, and I must admit I haven't seen the original from beginning to the end, but after this remake, I will surely catch up on it. My dad, who knows the classic movie inside out, loved this remake, too. So if your're up for some good movie fun, I highly recommend The Magnificent Seven.
Oh, it also has an impressive cast like Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Matt Bomer and Chris Pratt, to name a few.

Scented Candles
Another advantage of the colder weather, I can lid my scented candles all day long and not just on chillier summer evenings. Like with perfumes I love the warmer scents such as vanilla, caramel and so on. They create this cosy, pleasant atmosphere, where I can completely lock out everything that is currently on my mind. Do you have any recommendations for some delicious scented candles?

So that's it from my side for the month of September. What kept you occupied this month? Let me know, until then...

Monthly Roundup

August

Two more days until we move on to September. That means it is time for my Monthly RoundUp. How did you spend your month of August? Any highlights? To get things started, here are some of my highlights for the month of August.

1. Macaron Baking Sheet Mat
At first sight, I was not so sure about this Macaron Baking Sheet Mat. But let me tell you, it works like a charm. It streamlines the whole process. By using the mat, all macarons have the same shape, so you don't have to mix and match to find a fitting top and bottom piece. Also, the surface of the macarons hardly cracks up anymore. To make things even better, it comes with a low price tag and is reusable. What more can you ask for?

2. NYX Cosmetics in German drugstores
Finally, after years of waiting, NYX Cosmetics is available in German drugstores(at dm drugstores to be precise) For years, only a fraction of their product range was purchasable in Germany. My favourite products so far are their lipliners. They perform incredibly. Now that I can get my hands on so much more NYX products, I am sure I find some more favourites. Any recommendations?

3. Rosehip Oil
I am always on the search for new products to improve my skin care routine. My latest addition is Rosehip Oil. So far, I love the immediate results. My skin looks more glowing and moisturised. I plan on doing a whole blog post about the benefits of Rosehip Oil, so keep an eye out for it.

4. A trip to Vienna
If you are planning a city trip, I highly recommend Vienna. We made a family trip to Vienna this August and I loved it. Vienna was an imperial residence for hundreds of years, therefore, it houses an impressive heritage of European history. It offers an amazing collection of art, music, architecture as well political history to discover. Besides this, the city has some great stores for a little retail therapy at any budget. To sum it up, Vienna is for sure worth a trip.

That's it for me for the month of August. Until next time...

What a strange world...

“What a strange world we live in ... said Alice to the Queen of Hearts”
- Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland -

Images: AlwaysJudging, Slufoot, DepartmentChic, VildeKan

Quote by Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

I recently came across this statement from Sofia Coppola,

"It's about misunderstandings between people and places, being disconnected and looking for moments of connection.
There are so many moments in life when people don't say what say mean, when they are missing each other, waiting to run into each other in the hallway."

Also, she said this, explaining what her movie "Lost in Translation" is about. In my opinion, it fits perfectly into the current vibe of the world.
Anyways... I don't want to get too preachy, so I close my August Vibes with that quote.

I hope you all have a great month of August. I'd love to hear from you.

Monthly Roundup

July

From now at the end of each month, I will dedicate the last post of the month to a Monthly RoundUp. It will contain the things that kept me occupied during this specific month. I don't limit it to beauty and fashion only, rather including other stuff, so that you get to know another side of me.

So without any further ado here is my July's RoundUp:

1. White Collar
Yes, I know I am a little late to the game, considering the show ended in 2014.

However, with my other favourite shows on summer break as well as a mostly bad German television programme, I followed my sister's recommendation. To put it lightly, I am hooked on it. It contains anything I want in a show: amazing characters, great storylines and a good sense of humour. So if you are like me and haven't watched the show already, I highly recommend it.
On another note, Matt Bomer plays the leading role, just sayin'.

2. Macaron Recipe
After many trials and errors, I finally found a Macaron Recipe that worked. I will be sharing it with you sometime in August, so make sure to keep on eye out for this post.

3. Birkenstock Gizeh Sandal
As you may have noticed by reading my fashion posts, I am a High Heel Girl all the way. Nevertheless, even I have to admit that on some rare occasions a flat shoe just works better. For the summertime, my flat shoe of choice is the Birkenstock Gizeh Sandal sandal. Their footbed moulds to the natural shape of my feet which makes them very comfortable. They come with a reasonable price tag. Furthermore, they are available in all kind of colours. So for a flat shoe, they are quite fashionable.
P.S.: I bought the silver one in the picture.

4. ColourPop Ships Internationally
Finally, after almost one year of waiting, ColourPop ships internationally.
Now I can finally try out myself if their Super Shock Eyeshadows and all their other products are worth the online hype. Their prices are definitely unbeatable. Nothing on their website is more exoensive than 8$. I already placed an order and will keep you updated on my thoughts of the ColourPop products.

That's it from my site for the month of July. What kept you occupied this month?

Why Grey is the perfect Wall paint

Deco Tip

While I am absolutely no fan of 50 Shades of Grey, I love me some grey walls. Some of you are probably frowning, thinking grey is such a dull hue, I don't want it in my living space. However with this post, I hope to proof you wrong and show you what a great impact a grey paint colour can have on your home.

Grey is the transition of two non-colours black and white, in colour psychology, it is the shade of compromise. It stands for subduedness, quietness and restraint and that's where the charm of this colour lies. As a neutral shade, it has a steadying effect on other colours. Toning down stronger and brighter shades while highlighting the softer ones.

Depending on the intensity grey can create a softer more feminine vibe as well as a tougher masculine mood.

Grey isn't simply grey. It offers a variety of colour gradations from very light to almost black. With warm undertones as well as cold ones. Combining different shades of grey creates a sophisticated and modern atmosphere.

Last but not least being a neutral, grey never goes out of style.

Could I persuade you? Do you like the impact of a grey painted wall on a room as much as I do?

Who are you?

I recently came across this quote by Robert M. Blake...

Control yourself.
Love yourself.
Pay attention to yourself.
While everyone is focusing on you,
you focus on you.
While they try to destroy,
you create, then you create some more.
And then they will remember you.
People like that will always
remember you.

Show them you are more.
The goal is not to defeat them.
The goal is to make them understand.

With this in my mind, I created July's Mood Board. I hope both appeal to you somehow.

Images:TheyAllHateUs

So for the rest of the year, I will try to focus more on me instead of what I others think of me. What are your plans for the rest of the year?

How to make a bold wallpaper work

Deco Tip

For quite some time, I have a slight obsession with bold wallpapers. I love how they can transform a space.  And the best thing is you don't always have to wallpaper a whole room to get the effect. Today I share with you some ideas how to make a bold wallpaper work. Let's get started.

1. Use a bold wallpaper to set visual accents
If you are just not ready to go all in, use the wallpaper strategically. For example, cover cabinet doors, the back wall of an open cabinet or shelves with it. Even simpler, frame pieces of wallpaper and hang it on your wall like a picture. By framing different patterned wallpapers, you can create a gallery wall.

2. Wallpaper your ceiling instead of your walls
By wallpapering just your ceiling, you can lower or lift it. By cover your ceiling with a metallic wallpaper, the light bounces off of it and creates the illusion of a higher ceiling.

3. Start with one wall
Instead of covering the whole room with a bold wallpaper only place it on one wall to create a "feature wall". This way you avoid getting overwhelmed by the print but you still put a twist to the room.

4. Choose a painting-like wallpaper
Instead of going for a bold design, pick a wallpaper that could act like an oversized work of art, to create an eye-catching feature wall.

5. Choose a side room
It does not need to be the main living area, think powder room or cloakroom, to play with a bold wallpaper. It is an easy way to glam up these rooms.

6. Play with contrasts
Okay, you did and covered a whole room with a really bold wallpaper. Now it might be tempting to arrange the whole room in a coordinating colour scheme. But hold on, instead of going the common way, think outside the box and play with contrasts. Use complementing colours or play with feminine and masculine elements. By adding softer elements to the room while using a graphic complete the picture.

As you can see, there are many options for making a bold wallpaper work. Just take a chance and try it out. Most shops offer samples so that you can try out different styles before you have to settle for one. Also nowadays, many wallpapers come in a removable version, so the whole process has become much more streamlined.

What do you think? Will you give one of my ideas a try?

June Vibes

You can get it if you really want

Here we are, almost halfway through the year. I am entering into my fifth month of blogging. I don't know where it's going to take me, but what I have learned so far is...

Sometimes you have to do what you are scared of doing. You have to  step out of your comfort zone and take on new challenges if you want to get anywhere. On that note, here is my June Mood Board.

To bring my June vibes to an end, I wanna share with you a quote:

For what it's worth. It's never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you are proud of, and if you find that you're not, I hope you find the strength to start over again.
- F. Scott Fitzgerald -

Have a wonderful month of June and stay tuned for more posts.

How to Decorate according to the Melon Rule

Deco Tip

The Melon Rule? Should I decorate my whole space with only melons? Has she lost her mind? These are probably the thoughts that are running through your mind right now. No, I don't want you to decorate your home with all sorts of melons. However, this simple rule can help you to amp up your living space in no time.

By adding piece after piece to your living space, you can easily create a cluttered, chaotic room vibe. The Melon Rule will prevent just that.

The rule says you shouldn't decorate with items which are smaller than a honeydew melon. Larger objects catch the eye, create structure and therefore a modern living atmosphere. This applies not only to bigger rooms but also for small rooms. Contrary to popular belief larger items don't shrink the tiny space they rather open them up.

Do you agree?

May Vibes

What Susie says of Sally...

A little something to think about...

When people insult you, don’t take offence, don’t take it personally, but do listen to their words. They are telling you how they see the world, and they are telling you the exact negative qualities that they possess. “The Law of Mirrors” states that one can only see what’s in them, regardless if it is what is actually present in reality or not. Release the need to defend or try to explain to them that you’re not being whatever-nasty-insult-they’ve-thrown-at-you, but evaluate instead all of these insults, and realise that this is who they are. Then, decide if a person with those qualities is one who you’d like in your life or not.”

Easter Decorations

- Get your house Easter ready -

I am a big fan of interior as well as seasonal decoration. I picked this up from my mum, who does the greatest decorations you can imagine, never kitschy, always sophisticated and modern. On that note and with Eastern fast approaching, I thought I share with you some of this year's Easter Decorations.

The egg wreath is the centrepiece of the dining table and the little rabbit family is placed on a sideboard in the living room.

Both of theses pieces sit on top of side tables.

On the right, you can see some outdoor decoration for the terrace and on the left another piece of the interior decoration.

Moody Vibes

- Interior Design -

For the longest time, I was into bright, light, airy living arrangements. I always felt that a room with a majority of dark colours can easily create a confining and oppressive atmosphere. But lately, I grow fond of these moody interior designs. They no longer feel restricting to me but rather sophisticated and grown-up. Below I have gathered a few of my favourite examples of moody living styles.

Do you get the same vibe as I am? What kind of interior design do you like?
